Whatever the format or length, Jan wrote three drafts of everything: the first always in longhand, the second and third typed. Here are manuscript pages from the short story ‘Angel in the Library’. Jan noted that for her, a page of handwriting always equated with a typed page: 400 words. Note the way she added a word count tally in the margin of the handwritten page.
