Remembering Jan

This is the place where other people’s recollections of Jan will be recorded. Hopefully, it will spill over on to many pages as the weeks and months go by. All contributions are welcome, and this page will be reconfigured to record them.

1950s: This wonderful account from a schoolfriend Jane Sherman first appeared on Jan’s Flemish friends’ website. Jane and another close friend, Bernadette Watts, talk more about their schooldays with Jan here.

1970s: Tony Lacey was Jan’s editor at Penguin – here he remembers their friendship and experience of working together.

1982-84: A wonderful piece by a student from Jan’s years teaching at Oxford Polytechnic (now Oxford Brookes University) by Terry Farish.

1980s+: Adele Geras was a long-time colleague and friend of Jan – she wrote about her for Hodder Children’s Books’ ‘Silver’ series blog.

Mary Sutcliffe remembers Jan’s school visits at a time when educators were influenced by Aidan Chambers’ and Margaret Meek’s seminal ‘workshop’ style approaches – Jan’s stories were integral to this exciting kind of work in the classroom.

Author Paul May wrote about being inspired to become an author by Jan.

More to come …
